BOOK NOTES

We have a few copies of William Barclay's delightful story of his own life, A Spiritual Autobiography, which I have read again and again, for it tells how he faced difficulties in such a way that it helps us do likewise. $2.50 postpaid.

Oscar Cullmann's Baptism in the New Testament, originally published in German by one of the great New Testament scholars, takes the position that the essence of Christian baptism is the reception of a member into the Body of Christ. While advocating adult baptism, he also allows for infant baptism. You will be interested in his argument. $4.50 postpaid.

Don DeWelt, founder of College Press and publisher of many of the books we list in this column, is one of the most unusual men of this generation. Since he is a great doer he has led an interesting life, one fraught with many crises. His life story, Happy On The Way To Heaven, makes for interesting and profitable reading. He says he wrote the book because he believes God has wrought a miracle in his life. It is well worth the price of $8.50 postpaid.

Speaking of College Press, Don DeWelt is still resolved to issue the writings of Carl Ketcherside. While he first attempted to generate enough interest by publishing the entire set, 34 books in 12 volumes, he now will do one volume each quarter. He will begin with Carl's autobiography, updated by Leroy Garrett. The price is $15.00 prepaid. Please reserve your copy and pay in advance so we can help finance this good work. Send your order to us.

We recommend two other recent publications of College Press, which are now available from us. What the Bible Says About Growing Old by Bill and Judy Norris at $14.50 postpaid is appropriate reading for young or old. Their chapter "on Psalms and Creative Living" is excellent. Then there is the reprint of Alexander Campbell's, The Christian System, long out of print, now available $13.50.

Have you ever heard of inductive preaching? A book about preaching by that title, with the subtitle "Helping People Listen," written by a professor of preaching and his son, who works in communication, tells how to get people to listen to you. It is a matter of being inductive rather than deductive, and it makes some important points that could change your attitude about preaching, either as a speaker or a hearer. $7.95.

The Living Psalms by Claud Westermann is a pleasure to read. You will appreciate its direct style that is without jargon. It divides psalms into such types as narrative, trust, lament, praise, blessing. It is translated from the German, and while scholarly it is practical. $17.95.

We mention again that Michael Green is always exciting to read, and his book on I Believe in the Holy Spirit is especially so in that it deals with the work, baptism, gifts, and fulness of the Spirit. The fundamental conviction behind the book is that the Holy Spirit is a Spirit of unity. Lots of solid material. $12.95 postpaid.

Recently reprinted is the helpful and informative Spiritual Depression by Martin Lloyd-Jones. It deals with the causes and cure of depression. If you find yourself often in the doldrums this book could be a real blessing. $9.50 postpaid.

Some tell us that they read The Stone-Campbell Movement by Leroy Garrett again and again. Since it is over 700 pages the price of $21.95 is a bargain. Send us your check and we will send you the book postpaid. Or you can get it free when you send us a minimum of eight subs to this journal at the club rate of$3.00 per name new or renewal, a total of $24.00, but you must request the book.

Our new bound volume for 1987-88 entitled The Sense of Scripture: Studies in Interpretation is now ready at $12.50 plus postage, $14.00 total. This volume matches the previous volumes. The bound volume 1985-86 is also available at the same price. All seven of our bound volumes, dating back to 1977 are offered at the special price of $65.00 postpaid.
